La Ciotat, near Marseille

On Sunday morning (6 June) we were all rushing our pack up of the campervan to head 30 minutes north for me to do some canyoning which I'd booked in to do at 9am. We were just about to drive off when I got a text message that it'd been cancelled, so the day didn't start so great. A couple of hours later we were on the road, leaving Biot near Nice to head west toward Marseille. We were in desperate need of more supplies for the campervan as so much fun had left us no time to grocery shop with most supermarkets closing at 7.30pm while we got 'home' from travels at about 10pm when it's starting to get dark. Only problem was that we forgot that France practically closes down on Sundays and no shops of use to us were open anywhere.

We were also trying our first attempt at winging it with camp sites and not booking ahead with the general plan to stay in the La Ciotat area. After driving around a bit we found a semi-useful map at the train station and eventually a camping ground. It seems my French skills are nowhere near as good as I thought, because Sunday was very tough communicating as no-one we've come across in the La Ciotat area (small town) speaks any English. At the camp site I got some very basic instructions (that I could understand) and a mark on a map of where to park. Walking ahead the area looked almost impossible to get a large campervan into, but after a rather impressive 20-point turn I got it in (I was inspired by the Nice bus driver on Saturday).

We were just about to write the day off as an unfortunate crap one among such a brilliant run of awesome days, and settle in to eat some Rice Bubbles for dinner with long life milk (just about all we had left in the campervan), when we decided to go for a stroll along the beach. I'm so glad that we did because it was then that we could really appreciate how beautiful this area is, even though we were hungry and tired. But the day ended on a very good note with us stumbling across a little bar / restaurant literally on the water's edge where we had a really nice spag bol and lasagne (see pics above and left). The staff were fantastic with the kids and we all had a great meal as they tried to understand us and vice-versa. So, not such a bad day after all!
